How Much Would an Anesthesiologist Be Paid Monthly?
by Fred Decker, Demand MediaAnesthetics can be administered intravenously, rather than through a mask.
The delivery of anesthesia is a highly responsible task, and anesthesiologists are both highly trained and highly paid in consequence. Information on anesthesiologists pay is available from a number of industry sources, typically placing their annual income at more than $300,000 per year. Most sources dont cite a monthly income, but this can be calculated from the annual salary.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups anethesiologists with other physicians and surgeons, and provides an average income figure of $184,650. However, this is low for anesthesiology. The American Medical Group Associations members employ more than 125,000 physicians, and their annual salary survey is an excellent source of information on physicians salaries. They place the median income for anesthesiologists at $370,500. That annual income is the equivalent of $30,875 per month. However its a median, so half of anesthesiologists participating in the survey earned more.Locum Tenens Survey
Medical staffing agency Locum Tenens performs an annual survey that focuses directly on anesthesiologists, and provides more complete data. Their figures show an average annual salary of $364,689 for anesthesiologists across the country. Thats equal to $30,390 per month. The survey showed that those anesthesiologists who operated or partnered in a practice earned an average of $394,333 per year, while those who were salaried employees earned $348,406. Those figures equal $32,861 and $29,033 per month.Related Reading: What Kind of Personal Qualifications Does an Anesthesiologist Need?
Further Data
The Locum Tenens survey showed that earnings ran on a distinct curve, based on years in practice. Those whod been in practice 13 to 20 years had the highest earnings. with newer and older practitioners earning correspondingly less. There are significantly fewer female anesthesiologists, accounting for 17 percent of the surveys respondents. There is also a distinct gender gap in earnings. Female anesthesiologists earned an average of $349,545, or $29,128 per month, while their male counterparts earned $367,049 or $30,587 per month.Outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that demand for all physicians and surgeons will grow at a rate of 24 percent between 2010 and 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. This is due in large part to the aging of the demographically-significant baby boomer generation, and their correspondingly heavier use of the healthcare system. Anesthesiologists should be in similarly high demand. As of early 2012 its not considered a highly competitive specialty, indicating that there are relatively few residents seeking positions.Ads by Google
